Traveling with Small Children

Traveling with Small Children

Summertime is upon us, and it’s time to take off on your family vacation. Traveling with children can be both challenging and fun. Watching your child explore new sights and sounds is fun and educational.

Here are tips for traveling with your infant/toddler:

  1. Be prepared to stop frequently. Your child will need to be able to get out of the car seat every couple hours in order to stretch, have a diaper change, and or/eat. If you are traveling by plane, have an aisle seat so you can get up and walk with your child. Also, plan the most direct flight so that you have shorter flight time and do not have to transfer planes.
  2. Bring age-appropriate snacks and foods. Finding a restaurant that meets the needs of your child may be difficult during travel. Make sure to have foods available in case the places you stop do not have what your child needs.
  3. Bring toys and activities to entertain your child.
  4. If you will be outside on your trip, take hats and sunscreen. Children burn more quickly and should be kept out of direct sunlight as much as possible.
  5. Plan short outings that allow time for the child to nap. Keeping your child’s schedule as much like the schedule at home will allow the child to be more rested and have more fun while you are on your outings.
  6. Make sure you have first aid supplies and basic medications, such as Tylenol. Also, if your child is on medications at home, make sure you have enough supply prior to leaving for vacation.
  7. Have your doctor’s number with you in case any questions arise. Locate an urgent treatment center and hospital that is close to your hotel in case of emergency.

Most importantly, have fun with your child. Small children learn new things daily and getting out and exploring new areas is important. Family vacations are a good way to teach children, in addition to family bonding time. So pack up your car, put your child in the back seat, and take off on your adventure!
