by David K. Alexander, MD, Kentucky Ear, Nose & Throat

Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is an incredibly common problem, with some estimating if affects up to 15% of adults in the United States. While most causes of tinnitus are benign – most commonly medication induced or from an underlying hearing loss – there are more concerning things that can also cause it. That is why it is important to have a thorough ear, head and neck exam, as well as a hearing screen as part of your evaluation.

Some potential signs of something more serious going on include:

  • Tinnitus only in one ear
  • A sudden onset or worsening of the tinnitus
  • Tinnitus associated with hearing fluctuations and room spinning episodes
  • Hearing your heart beat in your ear

It is important to know that while there are hundreds, if not thousands, of supplements claiming to help with tinnitus, none of these have ever been scientifically proven to work. In fact, there are no FDA approved medications for tinnitus. Depending on the source of your tinnitus, there are treatment options available though including:

  • Tinnitus masking devices
  • Hearing aids for those with underlying hearing loss
  • Cognitive behavior therapy
  • Masking techniques
