The Zika virus is accompanied by minor symptoms that can last approximately one week. Those infected rarely experience symptoms serious enough to cause a hospital visit; however, contracting the virus during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects, including microcephaly and Guillian-Barre Syndrome.
